Everything You Need to Know About Chain Blocks

Chain blocks, also known as chain hoists, are used to lift heavy loads vertically. They are typically used in situations where power lifting devices, such as a crane, is not practical. Chain blocks are available in a range of sizes including 500kg to 5 Tonnes, to suit different lifting requirements.

Useful Tips when Using a Chain Block

Do Not:

Don't Overload

It's important to always keep the load under the maximum capacity of the hoist.

Don't Change or Modify

Do not make any changes or modifications to the hoist - this is extremely dangerous! They're built to ensure the lifting is safe and within the W.L.L. so don't make any changes.

Twist the Chain

The chain will twist if the load being lifted spins. This can lead to damage as the chain will get jammed into the gears of the hoist.

Run the Chain Fall into the Load

If you aren't careful, the housing can become damaged or jam the chain.

Pull the Chain too Hard

If the chain is pulled too hard, this can spread the chain links and similarly if the chain is pulled on too fast, this can cause the load to spin so use a chain block slowly and carefully.

Side Pull

If a load is attempted to be lifted at an angle this can cause problems as a chain block is specifically designed to lift loads vertically and have a load placed directly under and centred so never attempt side pulling.

What to Consider when Buying a Chain Block

Weight Capacity

Establish the maximum amount of weight being lifted throughout an average day. Always pick a hoist with a larger capacity than what you would normally lift so even if the weight is slightly over 1000kg, you have to get the 2000kg chain block. This will also help with the lifespan of the chain block.

Lift Distance

When buying a chain block, choose an option for the height of the lift - 3 metres and 6 metres are common. The height of the lift is the distance from the hoist to the load that's being lifted.

Environment

It's good to keep in mind the type of place the chain block will be used in such as whether it's hot, cold, explosive etc. This will determine the durability of the hoist and what sort of protection will be needed. The lifespan and performance can be affected if an unsuitably chosen.
