1949 Ford Pick Up Trucks and Vintage Operator Handbooks || Great Wyrley
As the business expanded, we needed to enhance our offerings. Each new location brought fresh ways to meet customer demands. Our website reflects this growth, showcasing over 100,000 products and parts. This expansion stemmed from Alan and Wyn's commitment to never turn down a customer. If we don’t have it, we’ll do our best to find it for you!
During our time at Great Wyrley, we sold second-hand small plant machinery. This venture attracted loyal customers, some of whom we still serve today. Here’s a list of machines we sold:
- Clipper MTA36 Power Floats with Villiers F15 Engines
- Winget Petrol Drive Unit (PDU) fitted with Villiers C12 Engine
- Master Space Heaters (Paraffin) / Diesel
- Stothert Pitt W71 Rollers fitted with Petter AB1 Diesel Engines
- Errut PRM Grinders with Peter AA1 Diesel Engines
- Hayter Welders with JLO Engines, L372 Two Stroke Engine Mighty Midget
- Record Pipe Threaders
- Pegson 2” Water Pumps with Villiers C12 Engines
- Winget 3TA 4/3 Concrete Mixers with Villiers C12 Engines
- BHC, Barrow/Hoists for Saga Juniors
We sourced plant equipment from local hire companies. Customers seeking spares or reconditioning soon became regulars. One loyal customer was John Hayes, who owned JFH Plant in Bristol. After purchasing machines, he would refurbish them for his hire fleet or dismantle them for spare parts. He often arrived with his lorry and trailer to load up items and rummage through our old tea chests of spares (which we still use today). After sorting through the chests, he would lay everything out in the yard and, in his West Country accent, ask, “How much for the lot, Wyn?” He always accepted my price. On one occasion, he arrived in a 1949 Ford E83W 10 cwt pick-up, adorned with vintage livery for 'Saunders & Ralph.' He loaded it to the brim and headed back to Bristol via the M5. Sometimes he made this trip on a late Friday afternoon, which wasn’t always ideal! On one of these journeys, he reached Walsall when he heard a strange noise from the back of the truck. A mudwing was rubbing against the tyre! With vehicles of that age, you always carry tools, so he simply removed the mudwing, solving the issue (though he might have been a bit over the weight limit). John was a loyal customer for many years and may appear in future posts; Wyn spoke to him recently, and he’s still doing well!
We have exciting projects lined up, so stay tuned! If there’s anything you’d like to see from L&S or stories you want to hear, please message us on social media. We’re always looking for new ways to provide interesting content, and if you have anything to add, drop a comment below!
This is a 1957 Ford E83W Refurbished Pickup. Wyn recalls that the 1949 Pickup had a back body that didn’t lay flat until loaded. The original truck was dark green, and this photo gives an idea of the vintage livery that would have been painted on the side.
