How to || Store your Battery Properly

With colder months approaching, consider how to store the batteries from your cordless machines. Proper handling and storage can significantly extend battery life.

“How should I store my batteries”

  • Before storing your machine, wipe it and the battery with a slightly damp cloth. This removes dirt that can cause wear during storage.
  • If you plan to store your cordless machine for a while, remove the battery. This prevents damage if the battery malfunctions.
  • Ensure your battery is charged above 40%. For Lead Acid and Nickel Based batteries, the effects of storage are similar at any charge level. However, for Lithium-ion batteries, avoid fully charging before storage to reduce self-discharge.
  • Store your battery in a cool, dry, closed box, away from moisture and direct sunlight. A hot environment can reduce battery life by 50%. The ideal temperature range is -10C to +50C.

Stihl has prepared a handy checklist that you can print and keep in your work area:

“My machine has an integrated battery, how do I store this”

If your machine has an integrated battery, you don't need to remove it. However, follow the same steps for the entire machine.

Two additional steps for integrated batteries are:

  • Switch off the device and remove the activation key. This prevents the device from draining the battery while stored and avoids accidents.
  • Store the activation key separately from the cordless power tool.

Top tip!

When ready to use your machine after storage, charge the battery/tool for a short period. This helps preserve battery life and extends the service life of your cordless tool.
