Today we're going to change the rewind starter in a Briggs and Stratton 9T502 Engine. Remove the screws with an imperial ¼ socket spanner, that holds the cover in place. You will now be able to see the rewind starter, however this will be attached to the engine cover. Using a ? socket spanner, unscrew three screws located at the bottom of the engine housing. Then unscrew the two screws (located on the dipstick tube) using a ¼ socket spanner. You will now be able to release the housing and recoil. To release the recoil you will need to remove the rivets. Using a power drill, drill out the old rivets (you may want to secure the housing in a vice so this does not move when you are drilling). Put the new recoil in place, aligning it where the holes are, so you can place the new pop rivets in. Using a riveter, place down on the rivet and press more than a few times until the new rivet is secure, repeat this step until you have replaced all the rivets. Place the housing and the recoil back into position, and secure screws with a socket spanner. Finally place the cover back over the top, fixing it with the screws provided. That's how you change recoil on a Briggs and Stratton 9T502 Engine/ M40-450C Mcculloch Lawn Mower.
