Common Reasons Why Your Honda Lawn Mower Won't Start
Start with these basics:
- Is the oil level low?
- Is the gas turned on and is it fresh?
- Is the choke on and functioning?
- Is the air filter clean and dry?
- Is the plug wire securely connected?
- Is the bail lever engaged and working?
Bad Gas
This is the most common reason a Honda mower won't start. Even clean gas can go stale. Gas starts to degrade after one month, and by three months, it can solidify. Using a fuel stabiliser can help protect and clean your fuel system.
Oil Level
If the oil level is low, some Honda mowers won't start. This is intentional to protect the engine. Always check the oil level when refuelling. Do this on level ground with all wheels at the same height. Avoid overfilling, as this can damage the engine.
Gas Level
Check if there’s enough gas in the mower. If the gas is bad, drain the tank and clean the carburettor.
Gas Tap On
A fuel tap controls the supply to the carburettor. It's good practice to turn off the fuel when not in use, but it’s easy to forget to turn it back on!
Air Filter
A blocked air filter can prevent the mower from starting. Keep it clean. Check the air filter every 25 hours of use and replace it every 100 hours.
Plug Wire
The plug wire can become loose, especially if it gets knocked by shrubs or hedges. The wire is black with a rubber boot on the end. Ensure it makes a good connection with the plug; otherwise, the engine won't start.
Choke On
The choke is used to start a cold engine, providing a richer air-fuel mixture. Modern mowers often have an automatic choke, while some Hondas have a manual lever. If the mower doesn't start after three attempts, the plug may be flooded. Remove and dry the plug or leave the mower for 30 minutes to dry out. Try again without the choke.
Bail Lever On
This safety feature stops the blade within three seconds of release. It shuts off the engine and applies a flywheel brake. Some Honda mowers use the bail lever for stop/start control, while others have it integrated into the throttle lever.
