Why Your Chainsaw May Cut Out When Throttle is Applied

Is your engine losing power when you push the throttle down? Here are several reasons your chainsaw might stall at wide-open throttle (WOT).

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is located at the inlet of the fuel line, carrying gasoline from the tank to the carburettor. Poor quality gasoline can lead to deposits forming in the filter. When clogged, the filter fails to provide clean fuel to the carburettor, disrupting the flow to the engine and causing it to stall.

To inspect the fuel filter, remove the chainsaw's fuel cap and pour some gasoline into a separate container. Use a thin metal rod to filter the tank and check the filter's condition. If it’s clogged, replace it. If it’s clean, consider other potential issues.

Also, check if the fuel filter has come off the fuel line, as this can cause the engine to stall.

Restricted Fuel Lines

Fuel lines can restrict gasoline flow when there’s any debris or blockage. Stale fuel deposits can clog the lines, leading to stalling when the throttle is applied. A cracked fuel line will leak gasoline and allow air to enter, further disrupting performance.

If you find a leak, replace the fuel line. If the engine continues to stall, check the connection to the tank to ensure it’s secure.

Dusty Air Filter

A clean air filter is essential for smooth engine operation. It filters out dust and contaminants before air enters the carburettor. A clogged filter restricts airflow, depriving the engine of the air needed for combustion, which can lead to stalling.

The air filter is located at the rear of the chainsaw. Loosen the fasteners to remove it and check for dirt. If it’s not too dirty, a soap and water solution can clean it. If it remains in poor condition after cleaning, replace it.

Clogged Carburettor

A clogged carburettor may be the issue if the filters don’t resolve the problem. The carburettor mixes air and fuel for combustion. When fuel sits too long, it can degrade and form sticky deposits that clog the fuel jets, affecting fuel flow to the engine.
