The Stables Housing Horse Power || J.A.P Engines

L&S Engineers 2294 days ago View Comments

J.A. Prestwich Industries (JAP) was an English manufacturing company established in 1895. Alongside Villiers and Lister Petter, they were a cornerstone of British engineering. JAP began by producing aircraft, motorcar, and stationary engines. Their engines are still present at vintage rallies, with enthusiasts building their own collections. This week, we feature an article from J.A. Prestwich Industries Ltd. The following text is taken from JAP's handbook. At its peak, the JAP works was aptly described as "the stables housing horse power, with quality and efficiency," a fitting title for a company that continued production through two world wars!

J.A.P was initially formed to produce scientific instruments and experimental apparatus for machines used in cinematography. In 1902, the founder designed and built his first engine, showcasing his first complete motorcycle in 1903. Over the next five years, the company focused on motorcycles until deciding to concentrate solely on engines in 1908.

In the years that followed, JAP manufactured shells and aeroplane parts during World War I, refined their engines, and developed high-powered light engines for speedway, used by companies like Morgan Motor Co and Reliant. JAP fully merged with Villiers Engineering Company in 1957.

In 1964, JAP was completely absorbed by Villiers, which was simultaneously taken over by Manganese Bronze Holdings. Today, JAP engines remain an icon of British engineering, with enthusiasts frequently showcasing their refurbished engines.
