Maintenance Tips for a Small Engine
A small engine can run smoothly for years with regular maintenance. Here are some tips to keep your engine healthy.
Fresh Air
Small engines need clean air. A clean air filter allows maximum airflow and the best fuel/air mixture. Clean it if possible, but replace it if it's too clogged.
New Gas
Small engines perform best with fresh fuel. If fuel has been sitting for a long time, recycle it. Never add fuel stabiliser to old gas; it only works with fresh fuel.
Avoid Ethanol Blends
Ethanol-free fuel is preferred for small engines. Ethanol attracts moisture, which can cause ignition problems as it separates from the fuel and sinks to the bottom.
Check for Spark
Use a spark plug checker to see if electricity is reaching the spark plug. If there's no spark, you can identify the cause of the failure.
Old Carburettor
Replace your carburettor if it cannot be cleaned or repaired effectively.
Spark Plug
Check and adjust the spark plug every six months (or 100 hours) and replace it annually (or every 200 hours).
Oil Change
Change the oil every season to maintain good compression and prevent sludge buildup. Check the oil level each time you use the engine.
