Always Keep Your Chain Sharp (and have a spare one!)

A sharp chain is crucial for efficient cutting. If it hits a rock, it can quickly become dull. Continuing to use a dull chain forces the saw to work harder, leading to premature engine wear.

Keep a spare chain handy for quick replacements. This allows you to sharpen the dull chain at your convenience. Eventually, both chains will need replacing when they wear down.

Never Let Your Chainsaw Run Dry

If your chainsaw starts revving louder than usual, it may be running low on fuel. Shut it down immediately and refuel.

It’s tempting to squeeze out the last bit of fuel, especially when you’re close to finishing, but running dry can harm your chainsaw. Refuelling promptly is better for the machine's longevity.

Clean All Around the Chain

Before using your chainsaw, clean around the chain and bar. While they are designed to keep dust out, some debris will inevitably get through. Use a paintbrush or screwdriver to carefully remove any build-up.

While cleaning, inspect the chain and bar for damage. If you need to replace your chain but aren't sure which type you have, our blog post explains the various types of Stihl chains.

Seasonally Flip Your Bar

Your bar can wear unevenly due to friction and pressure from cutting. Flip the bar at least once a season. If you use your chainsaw heavily throughout the year, consider flipping it more frequently.
